Sight Center of Northwest Ohio

The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio offers comprehensive services to people of all ages who are experiencing vision complications that cannot be addressed in the traditional office setting. Founded in 1923 as the Toledo Society for the blind, The Sight Center is a non-profit, 501(c) 3, United Way Agency. It offers a distinguished history of service to persons who are blind or visually impaired throughout a 16-county area in Northwest Ohio.

Accredited by the National Accreditation Council of Agencies serving the Blind and Visually Impaired (NAC), The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio is equipped to deal with virtually every range of visual impairment from very mild to total blindness. The Center does not provide primary eye care, free vision examinations, or regular prescription eyeglass wear, rather we offer specialized vision rehabilitation services so that people with low vision can make the best use of their remaining vision and people who are blind can continue to live independently.

The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio blends a traditional not-for-profit treatment model with a medical office model of care that allows for a rewarding experience for both the client and his/her loved ones. Some of the reasons that The Sight Center has been able to serve Northwest Ohio successfully for the past 90 years and will be able to move forward successfully for years to come include:

Individual treatment plans.

Few people are really prepared for their first visit to The Sight Center. The emotional stakes are high. Hopes and expectations about improving vision are often unrealistic. The Sight Center is about rehabilitation...finding out what is important to each client and helping him/her accomplish these tasks in spite of changing vision issues.

Programs and Services.

The Sight center offers a unique blend of multi-disciplinary services that provide direct support to people of all ages and socio-economic levels. Some of these services include:

  • Low Vision Clinic. Specialized vision rehabilitation services that allow people with low vision to make the best use of their remaining vision.

  • Rehabilitation Teaching. Instruction in performing daily routines and activities such as personal grooming, and reading the mail.

  • Orientation and Mobility. Instruction in safe travel in the home, workplace or community.

  • Children’s Services. Early prevention for children from birth to three years and daily living skills for school-aged children.

  • Technology Resources. Assistance and training on the use of adaptive computer technology.

  • Satellite Locations. Currently, The Sight Center maintains a satellite location in Findlay, Ohio.

Qualified staff

The Sight Center staff dedicates our efforts to providing clients with help and hope for continued independence when glasses, contacts, surgery or medication are no longer viable options. The Sight Center employs a full staff of professionals, including optometrists, certified low vision therapists, licensed social workers, certified orientation and mobility specialists, certified rehabilitation teachers and technology and computer specialists. Additionally, staff members who are visually impaired or blind provide direct support and real life experience in coping with the same daily challenges that clients face.

Collaborations and community outreach.

The Sight Center shares with several area organizations and agencies the deep conviction that people coping with vision loss are entitled to and capable of leading full, productive, independent lives. Working together for the greater good of all allows these groups to change lives in measurable, positive ways
